Fractional Finance

  • Definition: Part-time, ongoing finance leadership or support.
  • Purpose: Provides strategic input and operational finance expertise on a flexible basis without the cost of a full-time hire.
  • Engagement: Long-term relationship — typically a set number of days per month or week.
  • Value: Scales with the business, ensuring continuity and embedding financial best practice as the company grows.
  • Best for: Scale-ups, SMEs, or businesses needing senior finance input but not yet ready for (or not wanting) a full-time CFO/Finance Director.

Interim Finance

  • Definition: Full-time, temporary finance leadership or support.
  • Purpose: Provides cover, delivery of a specific project, or stabilisation while recruiting a permanent hire.
  • Engagement: Fixed-term — usually three to nine months.
  • Value: Brings immediate bandwidth and problem-solving, but knowledge often leaves with them when the contract ends.
  • Best for: Businesses facing urgent gaps (e.g. resignation, maternity cover) or needing extra capacity for a defined project like ERP implementation or M&A integration.

In summary:

  • Fractional = strategic, flexible, cost-efficient, ongoing partnership.
  • Interim = intensive, short-term, focused on bridging gaps or solving immediate issues.
